IMG_8815“We are ready!”

Our SMRT Space MPV car arrived at the doorstep of Niwa Schoolhouse at 9.30am.

 IMG_8819

“Let’s go!”

IMG_8816

“Yeah! The car is going fast on the expressway!”

After a long, long, long drive, the Niwa-ians have finally reached their destination – Lilliputt!

IMG_8827

“We are all ready to conquer LilliPutt!”

IMG_8830

“Where are the putters and the golf balls, Ms. Angeline?”

IMG_8831

“I am going to choose the pink golf ball.”

IMG_8833

“I think orange golf ball will be good for me.”

IMG_8834

“Purple is my lucky colour.”

IMG_8835

“I will take my Papa’s favourite red.”

IMG_8837

“Ok, simple white is the best.”

IMG_8838

“Yes, I can be the first to collect my putter.”

IMG_8839

“I am second.”

IMG_8840

“You need to hold the putter in this way.”

IMG_8842

“Hurray! We have our putters ready!”

The Niwa-ians got really lucky and received a complimentary training session from one of the coaches from LilliPutt. Yippee!

IMG_8844

“Children, you need to look straight when you putt.”

IMG_8843

“Oh, this is how you hold the putter.”

IMG_8845

“Next, you swing the putter gently.”

IMG_8846

“We will be careful when we handle the putter later.”

IMG_8847

“Please remember not to swing the putter above your knee level.”

IMG_8852

“WOW, this is amazing!”

IMG_8854

“Please remember the house rules of LilliPutt!”

IMG_8858

“Come on!! Let’s go and play some golf!”

“Uncle Matt, HELP!”

IMG_9126

“I don’t need my Papa’s help anymore.”

Station 13: Big Splash at ECP

IMG_9113

“The golf ball has to take the lift.”

IMG_9110

IMG_9117

“I totally agree with all of you!”

Station 14: Padang

IMG_8956

IMG_8858

“WE DID IT and we want to do it again!”

Z-O-O = Zoo

WE’RE GOING TO THE ZOO!

We’re going to the zoo, zoo, zoo!
How about you, you, you?
You can come too, too, too!
We’re going to the zoo, zoo, zoo!

See the elephant with the long trunk swinging,
Great big ears and a long trunk swinging.
Snuffing up peanuts with the long trunk swinging.
And we can stay all day!

“We’re going to the zoo, zoo, zoo!
How about you, you, you?
You can come too, too, too!
We’re going to the zoo, zoo, zoo!

8.30AM – Gather at Niwa Schoolhouse
Our little Niwa-ians arrived in school with their parents, looking all ready to spend a fun-filled and educational morning at the Singapore Zoo. As they were getting ready to set off, the teachers took the opportunity to explain the safety rules to the children. Listen up!

IMG_0924

9.15AM – Board the Mini Coach to Singapore Zoo at Mandai
One by one, the Niwa-ians (young and old) climbed the steps and ‘hopped’ onto the mini coach. One or two little cheerful ones even greeted the bus driver with a happy ‘Good Morning!’ That surely perked up the young lad with the children’s love and warmth. Throughout the bus ride, the Niwa-ians sang merrily to many familiar tunes. Here we go!

IMG_0929

“My papa and mei mei are going with me to the zoo.”

IMG_0931

“Mama, do I look like you?”

IMG_0932

“Lucky me, I got the chance to sit with my favourite teacher.”

IMG_0936

“Tricia, smile for the camera. Are you trying to make the peace sign?”

IMG_0934

“Hi 5 to the camera, Seven.”

IMG_0935

“I love my mama, she is bringing me to the zoo.”

IMG_0933

“Daddy is taking us to the zoo tomorrow……….”

IMG_0944

“But my daddy is working.”

IMG_0942

“My daddy too.”

IMG_0943

“It is ok, we will go with our friends and teachers. Most importantly, we are going to learn and have fun together.”

9.45AM – Arrival at the Singapore Zoo
“Hello, Singapore Zoo, we have arrived.” The Niwa-ians could hardly contain their excitement any longer as soon as the entrance of the Singapore Zoo came into sight. They squeaked with delight and they were all ‘revving’ their ‘engines’ to dash in (literally and physically)!

IMG_0946

“Niwa Schoolhouse at the Singapore Zoo! Say c-h-e-e-s-e!”

IMG_0949

“I will look after Blossom and Chervelle. I am a big girl now.”

IMG_0950

“Chervelle, I can look after you too.”

IMG_0951

“Who will look after us then?”

IMG_0952

“We will look after you, Little Tots. Trust us.”

IMG_0955

“Laoshi, will you look after me please?”

IMG_0956

“Maybe I will just walk, I have grown quite a fair bit too.”

IMG_0957

“The queue for the tickets is so long. Let me try this puzzle.”

IMG_0958

“Can I have a turn too please?”

IMG_0953

‘We will just take a rest to save some energy.”

10.00AM – Walkabout at the Zoo
The little ones spent a good time exploring the Singapore Zoo on foot where they were greeted by all sorts of animals. The most amazing part was to actually observe how these children ‘interact’ with the animals. They expressed so much curiosity and passion for their animal friends. Most of them wanted to hug, touch and even ‘kiss’ the animals! Wow!

IMG_0960
“Are you checking our tickets?”

IMG_0962

“Hurray! We are the first group to enter the zoo.”

IMG_0963

“Eunice, wait for me. Don’t go so fast.”

IMG_0964

“Not too bad, we are third in place.”

IMG_0965

“Tian Ming, wait for mama.”

IMG_0966

“Blossom, it is our turn now! Yeah!”

IMG_0967

“Chervelle, is this your first time at the zoo?”

IMG_0968

“Ms. Evelyn, can you hold my hand?”

IMG_0969

“Tricia, Ms. Jade can carry you for a while.”

IMG_0970

“Hi 5!”

IMG_0971

“Loooook! What animal do you think we are looing at?”

IMG_0975

“The animals are up there, high in the trees.”

IMG_0976

“I give you a clue, I am pretending to be that animal now.”

IMG_0977

“Is it that animal?”

IMG_0978

“Yes, you are right!”

IMG_0979

“What am I?”

IMG_0980

“I don’t know. Mama, do you know?”

IMG_0981

“Let us go and ask Ms. Jade.”

IMG_0982

“We know the answer.”

IMG_0984

“I think I may know the answer too.”

IMG_0983

“Let me tell you, it is a monkey.”

IMG_0985

“Let’s continue the walk.”

IMG_0988

“I have the enery to run now. Catch me if you can.”

IMG_0989

“Laoshi, can I run with Tricia too?”

“Maybe it is safer to hold my hands.”

10.15AM – Feeding Time at the Polar Bear Enclosure
As the little Niwa-ians ‘chanced upon’ the Polar Bear Enclosure, it was feeding time or our white fur friend ‘Inuka’. They were so intrigued by this animal that they went “WOW!” with every movement made by him, such as a jump into the cold, deep water or a back stroke to glide through the water.

IMG_0991

“Tian Ming, do you like the polar bear?”

IMG_0992

“The show is about to start.”

IMG_0993

“I am not sure if I like polar bear, laoshi.”

IMG_0994

“I will probably enjoy the feeding show.”

IMG_0995

“Seven, what about you?”

IMG_0996

“The girls coud not get their eyes off the polar bear.”

IMG_0999

“Chervelle, look at the camera for a while. The polar bear will still be there when you turn around.”

IMG_1001

“LOOK! The feeding show has started.”

IMG_1002

“The polar bear is such a good swimmer.”

IMG_1003

“Desiree, do you like the polar bear now?”

IMG_1006

“WE LIKE POLAR BEAR.”

IMG_1004

“Thank you for visiting me.”

10.30AM – Splash Safari Show at Shaw Foundation Amphitheatre
“It’s a high-energy splash parade filled with many special moments that will tickle your funny bone and tug at your heartstrings at the same time. Get closer to the world of our amazing maritime maverick and learn about how we can all do our part to save the oceans. – Singapore Zoo”

IMG_1010

“Blossom, let’s go and watch the Splash Safari show at Shaw Foundation Amphitheatre.”

IMG_1009

“Wait! I want to look at the orang utans first.”

IMG_1012

“Laoshi, will the orang utan drop from above?”

IMG_1013

“Ms. Jade, is the orang utan peeing on us?”

IMG_1014

“We have to run along before the Splash Safari show starts.”

IMG_1015

“I can run very fast, Ms. Angeline.”

IMG_1016

“Boys, let’s hurry!”

IMG_1024

“Phew! We made it just in time!”

Now, it was the time to sit down and relax a bit while the Niwa-ians continued to get even more excited with an animal show! Each time an animal friend appeared on stage, they cheered so loudly that we believe the animal friends could hear them clearly!

IMG_1026

“Look at the crowd!”

IMG_1025

“No, look at the sea lion performing.”

IMG_1020

“Ooooo…. yes!”

IMG_1019

“Where? What did I miss?”

IMG_1018

“Desiree, stay focus on the sea lion.”

IMG_1022

“Is the sea lion going to jump out of the water again?”

IMG_1023

“I think so.”

IMG_1027

“With a blue ball on its nose!”

IMG_1028

“Wow……. amazing!”

IMG_1029

“Look, another trick!”

IMG_1031

“The sea lion did it perfectly again!”

11.00AM – Tram Ride around Singapore Zoo
After a great adventure in the outoors, the best way to continue this educational field trip would be to bring the little Niwa-ians on a tram ride where they could ‘say hello’ to more of their animal friends. This was also a good chance for the children to revisit some animals that they have shown great interest in, such as the ‘monkeys’.

IMG_1032

“We just missed a tram. We will just have to wait for another tram.”

IMG_1033

“How about a water break then?”

IMG_1035

“I need the fan. The weather is so hot.”

IMG_1036

“Is that the tram coming?”

“Yes, and off we go!”

11.15AM – Adventure at Rainforest KidzWorld
This must be one of the highlight for the field trip to the Singapore Zoo as the children gained first hand experience in feeding the goats! Yes, the Little Tots were the bravest of the lot as they went up-close to offer the leaves for this group of animals! They kept requested for more, more and more leaves to feed the ‘hungry goats’. How loveable!

IMG_1038

“We need to walk a litle further to reach Rainforest KidzWorld.”

IMG_1040

“Tian Ming, do you need the umbrella?”

IMG_1039

“Let me check if I have an umbrella to share too.”

IMG_1044

“It is ok. I love the sun.”

IMG_1045

“Me too and I can run very fast.”

IMG_1048

“Tian Ming, let me help you.”

IMG_1057

“We are at Rainforest KidzWorld after a short walk. Bravo!”

IMG_1066

“What animals can we visit here?”

IMG_1060

“Seven, can you see the small pony?”

IMG_1061

“Yeah, it is so small.”

IMG_1062

“Eunice, where have all the horses been to?”

IMG_1065

“No idea, let’s go and check out the goats then.”

IMG_1067

“What a crowd! Oh! It is feeding time!”

IMG_1069

“Can we feed the goats?”

IMG_1070

“Desiree, do you want to try feeding the goats?”

IMG_1075

“I will go first. Here you go, goats!”

IMG_1077

“Ok, it is my turn now.”

IMG_1076

“Mama, can you do it together with me?”

IMG_1079

“Seven, you can have my turn.”

IMG_1081

“Eunice, try it. It is fun feeding the goats.”

12.00PM – Koala Mania at Australia Outback
“G’day mates!” Let us welcome our Australia friends – ‘Chan’, ‘Idalia’, ‘Paddle’ and ‘Pellita’! This last stop (Koala Mania) was one of the most long awaited experience that the children have been asking since they stepped foot into the Singapore Zoo. The little ones were truly excited to see these furry animals, even if it meant that they were just ‘sleeping’! They still spent some time at the air-conditioned enclosure of the ‘koalas’ to observe their behaviour and to exclaim, “So cute!”

IMG_1084

“We are going to visit the koalas now!”

IMG_1083

“Little Tots, we will reach there in no time.”

IMG_1086

“Hurry up!”

IMG_1089

“Are we reaching soon, Mama?”

IMG_1101

“Hurray! We can see the koalas!”

IMG_1100

“Mama, what is the koala doing?”

IMG_1096

“Is the koala sleeping?”

IMG_1098

“Maybe.”

IMG_1092

“Shhhhh….. don’t wake up the koalas.”

IMG_1099

“Ok, we can visit the koalas again when they are awake.”

IMG_1094

“Yes, just like me when I am full of energy.”

IMG_1103

“Bye bye, koalas!”

12.30PM – Back to Niwa Schoolhouse
As the children walked out of the Zoo with a tired body and a spirited heart, the mini coach was alreay waiting for them at the bay. With some help, the little Niwa-ians boarded the bus and departed the most popular tourist attraction in Singapore – our Zoo. Till the next time then!

Day-Out to Singapore Changi Airport

Let the Niwa-ians tell you a story, a story about a school day of Niwa Schoolhouse that was filled with so much fun, laughter and joy.

“We are going to Singapore Changi Airport. Niwa-ians, are you ready?”

Boys at NiwaThe boys exclaimed, “Hurray! Yes!”

Girls at Niwa

The girls replied, “Us too!”
And they offered their brightest smile for the camera.

At the Door

The photographer said, “Let’s go!”

The team took a group photograph at the entrance of Niwa Schoolhouse before boarding the bus.

Pair 1 on the Bus

“Let’s hold hands!”

Teacher and Child

“Yeah, we are going to Singapore Changi Airport!”

Pair 2 on the Bus

“We can hardly wait to reach Singapore Changi Airport.”

On the Bus 1

“I like going on the big bus.”

On the Bus 2

“I am able to buckle the seat belt by myself.”

On the Bus 3

“I am a big boy now. I can sit by myself.”

“Vroom, vroom and off we go!”

During the bus ride, the Niwa-ians were tasked with a ‘mission’ that was to search for a list of pictures from a checklist, such as the ‘Flight Information Board’, the ‘runway’ and the ‘aeroplanes’.

Finally, the Niwa-ians and the teachers arrived at Singapore Changi Airport’s Terminal 3 after a 30 minutes journey. They were all geared up to start their adventure once they stepped foot into the ‘Arrival Hall’.

Here you go

“We can go this way to find the ‘check-in counters’.

Taking a lift

“How about taking a lift to the ‘Departure Hall’ first?”

Traffic Lights Fun

“We are right beside the ‘check-in counters’.”

Here is a tick to that

“Remember we saw the ‘Control Tower’ on our way here?”

I can find it

“I have found the ‘Flight Information Board’ right up there.”

Another one found

Welcome to Urban Greens!

In conjunction with Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, Niwa Schoolhouse embarked on a new community project titled as ‘Urban Greens’, together with Microgreenssg and The Healing Concierge as our partners.

15 May 2015 marked the first plant-in of the Microgreens seedlings for our Niwa-ians. Within the school campus of Niwa Schoolhouse, we made space to create a very special growing station that promises abundant sunlight for the plants. What a brilliant way of shouting “Planting in the Garden”, as Niwa means ‘garden’ in the Japanese language.

We are also very privileged to have Ms. Khai Lin from Microgreenssg to personally demonstrate the planting process of the unique seeds of the sunflower and the pea plant. To our great amazement, the older children were excited to be involved in a discussion about the conditions for the seeds to germinate.

The hands-on planting experience proved to be a great learning point for the little ones to explore with peat-moss soil, as they love to ‘pat’ the soil with tender loving touches to set a good foundation bed for the micro-seedlings. Furthermore, the children love to use the water spray bottle in watering the seedlings. It simply amazed them as they observed the process.

Now, the micro-seedlings are well-rested into their ‘bed’ and the children have been tasked with the responsibility of watering them twice a day. Read on to find out more. Continue reading

Goop and Colours = Fun!

Environmental Awareness

How can you tell if something is a solid or a liquid? Solids hold their shape, while liquids take the shape of the container that they are in. Goop is special because it acts like both a solid and a liquid.

One morning, our Little Tots at Niwa Schoolhouse got their little hands and fingers immersed and soaked in some real sticky and slimy goop.

What You Need:

  • Six cups of cornflour
  • Three cups of water
  • Large and clear tub

What You Do:

Step 1:
Put the cornflour in the tub.

Flour Added

Step 2:
Slowly pour in the water.
Stir the mixture until it starts to thicken.

Water Added

Step 3:
Put your hands and fingers into the goop.
Try to pick it up and scrunch it in your hands.
Release and watch it ooze away.

Ooze away

Step 4:
Make your own discoveries

Happily playing

More Fun with Goop!

Try changing your goop mixture too! Add some blue coloured ice blocks. What would happen? Add in the ‘reds’. What would happen now? Add a few more yellow ice shapes and swirl them around as the ice shapes liquefied.

Blue, red, yellow are the three primary colours. When you mix the primary colours together in different ways, you can make secondary colours -‘orange’, ‘purple’ and ‘green’.

Polar BearsLet's see what is in itWow

In addition, you can have the option of introducing animals, such as ‘polar bears’ and ‘penguins’ that live in the world’s extreme climates, namely the ‘Polar region’ and the ‘Antarctica region’ at the North Pole and South Pole respectively.
